How Platforms Detect AI-Generated Content in 2026

If you have used any AI tool to create or edit a photo in the last year, there is a good chance that platforms like Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok already know about it.
Not because they analyzed the pixels. Not because some neural network spotted artifacts in your image. They know because the AI tool told them.
Every major AI image generator now embeds invisible markers directly into the files it produces. These markers travel with the image wherever it goes. When you upload to a platform that reads them, your content gets labeled as AI-generated, sometimes with reduced reach, sometimes with an explicit "Made with AI" badge visible to everyone.
The Three Layers of AI Content Detection

Layer 1: C2PA Metadata (Content Credentials)

- Converting to PNG and back: Strips some EXIF fields but not necessarily C2PA or IPTC data. The complete absence of camera metadata is still suspicious.
- Basic metadata stripper: Solves the AI label problem but creates a new one. An image with empty metadata fields is unusual. Stripping metadata is actually worse than replacing it.
- Uploading to a messaging app first: Adds compression, reduces quality, and does not guarantee all markers are removed.

The trend is clearly moving toward more detection, not less. The EU AI Act requires labeling of AI-generated content. Google, Meta, and TikTok are all expanding their detection systems. Adobe is pushing C2PA adoption across its entire product line.
At the same time, platforms are getting better at detecting the absence of metadata as a signal. Simply stripping everything will become less viable over time. The sustainable approach is to ensure your content carries realistic, complete metadata that does not raise flags, whether the content was AI-assisted or not.
