SynthID in Veo and Gemini Videos: Generation, Editing and Verification

In brief

Google videos can carry SynthID when generated or edited with supported tools. A filmed source can therefore become part of a marked export. Verify the original video with a compatible tool, keep visual and audio results separate, and compare the processed copy.

SynthID in Veo and Gemini Videos: Generation, Editing and Verification

A video made from a prompt and a camera clip edited with AI can both contain provenance signals. If you are working with Veo or Gemini, start with the exported video rather than a screenshot of one frame.

Generation and editing are both relevant

Google describes SynthID marking for supported generated video. Its Gemini video-editing workflows also show why “filmed” and “AI-edited” are not mutually exclusive: a real clip can be used as the starting material for a new export.

Keep the camera source, any intermediate edit and the final download. Comparing these files helps you separate a capture-stage signal from one introduced later. Do not assume every Google product version or export path behaves identically.

Use the video verification tool

  1. Upload the original to a verifier supporting that Google video.
  2. Read whether the result concerns SynthID or Content Credentials.
  3. Save any reported time ranges and the date of the check.
  4. Keep that report for comparison with the processed export.

Gemini’s documented SynthID check currently recognizes Google AI content. Adoption of SynthID by another provider does not make this a universal verifier. Check the current upload limits in Google’s help page before selecting a file.

What timestamps tell you

A report can identify a portion of a video without saying every frame in that portion carries a detectable signal. For example, a short edited insert inside a filmed interview should not be interpreted as proof that the whole interview was generated.

Keep the audio question separate

A video contains pictures and may contain sound. A visual watermark result says nothing by itself about a separate audio signal. Keep the sound check separate and listen to the exported track. Do not infer audio-watermark removal from image or frame processing.

Process and compare on desktop

The MetaGhost online trial accepts images. Use MetaGhost Desktop for a video. Preserve the original, process a copy, then review movement, small text, faces, scene transitions and sound before running the same compatible video check again.

If the original was not detected, a negative result on the copy cannot show that a detectable watermark was removed. If it was detected, compare the reported signals and segments rather than relying on the download completing.

For still images, use the Gemini image guide. For post-capture marking outside Google tools, read about invisible watermarks on real footage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an edited camera video contain SynthID?

Yes. A supported AI editing workflow can produce a marked export from existing footage. The result does not mean that every part of the scene was generated.

Does an image check verify an entire video?

No. A still-image result covers that image. Video segments and an audio track require their own supported checks.
